Looking to increase traction on your bike by trying a wider rim set up, but don't want to break the bank?
The new Ibis 738 Aluminum wheels are an awesome choice to get all of the advantages of a wider rim set up, in a nice cost effective option! Ibis has always been known to be the leader in the wide rim profile, so it is awesome to see that technology trickle down to aluminum wheels. Featuring their own Ibis hubs with 36 points of engagement and coming in at $549 for a complete wheelset.
ADVANTAGES OF WIDE RIMS
A wider rim delivers better sidewall support so in many cases you can run lower pressures in your rubber. Tires mounted on wider rims don’t burp as easily. Lower pressures, even a pound or two, do several beneficial things, including increasing the contact patch, which results in better traction. Running lower pressures on varied terrain actually reduces rolling resistance. Wider rims are stronger and stiffer. With increased traction comes increased braking control.
HITTING THE PLUS SWEET SPOT
The 742/942/738/938 rims are ideal for the ultra low pressures (10-18 psi) that we like to run with 2.8 Plus tires (or 18-25psi for 2.25" - 2.5" tires). Running any of our 35mm internal width rims work incredibly well with the new 2.8 Plus rubber we've been riding from Schwalbe and Maxxis.A recent addition to the tire world that works perfectly with our wide rims are the new breed of 2.6" tires, both in 27.5" and 29" size. Our 3rd Generation Ripley with 29" x 2.6" rubber mounted raises the bike to a new level of confidence-inspiring traction. The low system weight of the wheels with these rims and tires combined with the monstrous traction advantage have been a revelation for those who have ridden them.
