Look Cycle 989
Using high modulus carbon fibre enables us to build lightweight frames while maintaining optimum stiffness: sufficient for the frame to combine excellent efficiency with comfort. The arrival of carbon in the MTB world gives new impetus to the use of rigid or semi-rigid frames since the weight savings are considerable.
The frame is of one-piece construction for greater strength and lightness. A ‘gusset’ is built into the one-piece mould under the head tube in order to enhance frame strength. This ‘gusset’ also provides fork clearance compatible with most new forks.
The carbon composition of the chain stays and seat stays features directional stiffness.Varying the precise orientation of the fibres that make up each carbon layer brings about 2 benefits: improved flexibility in the vertical plane (greater comfort and traction) along with increased stiffness in the lateral plane (improved pedal power transfer).
The down tube is reinforced with a metal protective plate which increases impact resistance by over 60% without any weight penalty.
The bike’s geometry has been designed based on the latest generation of suspension forks providing 100 mm of travel. The 70° head tube angle offers a perfect steering response/stability compromise.
The seat tube is a one-piece component and incorporates the seatpost. Not only does this design give the bike greater aesthetic appeal performance, it also improves performance. In actual fact 3 elastomers completely ‘insulate’ the seatpost from minor impacts and vibration.
These elastomers filter out vibration and allow the seatpost to flex backwards slightly, significantly improving the rider’s comfort. The seatpost offers ±5 mm fore and aft adjustment relative to the seatpost centreline. It is reversible thanks to the ability of the saddle clamp adjustment to swivel through 360°.
The 989 E-Post features the new A STEM, incorporating our Direct Drive concept in its MTB version. The Direct Drive concept means optimising all parameters relating to the rider’s position with the aim of providing maximum stiffness, reliability and safety in order to achieve top performance. We arrive at this result by using a short tapered head tube 1½” at the bottom and 11/8” at the top as well as eliminating the spacers since handlebar height adjustment is now achieved using our A-Stem which is adjustable lengthwise and reversible – its sections have been clearly specified to optimise steering precision.
